Make Time: A 5 Minute Action Plan

5 minute action plan blog banner

If a concrete basement is a foundation to a house, then Time Management is the foundation for all behavioural habits.

Strong Time Management builds:

  • Organization
  • Self-Organization
  • Execution of a practice/skill
  • Evaluations
  • & More!

Oftentimes I hear clients say, “I just have to do ‘X’ thing.” I always reply with: How will you do X thing?

I am often met with a blank stare, followed by “I don’t know, I will just have to do it”

So, how do you build the basement again? Oh right; Formulate a plan, hire the right team and start the journey.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love when clients hold a strong connection towards their beliefs. But how can we harness this passion/drive for real-time action and practice behavioural change?

Go Deeper: The Experiment stage.

First, assess where you might be struggling with ‘Making Time’ by answering a few questions:

  • Do you have a hard time committing to the goal?
  • Has there been a well-constructed process laid out?
  • Was the process Client-Centered or Coach-Centered?
  • How do you prioritize yourself over and around others?
  • How well are your calendar and reminder skills?
  • Is there a weekly workflow tracking sheet to keep accountable to?
  • How overwhelmed do you feel? (stress level)

Understanding these questions and answers.  Lead to some pretty cool eye-opening or AH-HA moments.  This, unfortunately, can take a little bit of time and patience for some.

It comes with push back or resistance, which sounds like “this is stupid why am I doing this again?” But remember to realign with what you value – Health, productivity and goal achievement- as it will be your guiding light.

The good news? The initial experiment stage is short. You only need to see how time is being spent. We recommend a time tracking system or journal the what, where, how and why time is spent.

The Takeaway

Once the awareness happens. You will know how to solve and fix the limiting factors. Opening up a whole new world of productivity, organization and better time management.

Improve upon it one per cent more,
with a slow steady build to perfection.

Be sure to remember this is not a one size fits all solution.  What works well for one person isn’t always true for another. Some people naturally manage time well. The goal isn’t to recognize a blind spot. Rather highlight the awesome. Improve upon it one per cent more, with a slow steady build to perfection. But hey isn’t that what we are all doing?
