When COVID locked you up, you swore no more excuses. “I am getting my workouts done.”

With all that newly found free time, you were bound to get it done. You had great intentions

But then the kids, the new work routine and a little self-loathing got in the way. 

Sincerely I ask, how is this any different than normal times?

What might be similarities here? Same figurative, different literals?

If concrete is the foundation of a house. Then time management is the foundation of behavioural habits

As new clients come in, I hear a recurring theme of frustration or failure for not completing workout programs and losing weight as planned.  

For most, time management can be a rookie mistake and overlooked during the beginning stages of a workout journey. 

For example, last week my new client Jane came in with what she thought was accountability issues. She would start workout programs with good intentions. She struggled to find the time and stay consistent.  This was upsetting because she valued exercise and how it made her feel. 

So, I asked her some preliminary deliberation and assessment style questions:

  • Do you follow constructed plans elsewhere in your life? Maybe for work or school etc…
  • How do you prioritize yourself over others?
  • How are your calendar and reminder skills?
  • Do you follow a weekly workflow chart to keep you accountable?
  • How overwhelmed or stressed do you feel?
  • What do you feel is the biggest limiting factor in your environment, right now?

From those answers, we were able to bring awareness to her schedule. Or lack thereof.

In understanding how to use similar organizational and planning skills from work, Jane applied the same skills with time management towards her fitness.

She began by planning what workout clothes to wear, reviewing her program and asking questions the night before. By doing so, it brought her more than setting a good intention of “wanting” to workout, it began creating behavioural skills towards positive change.

Now, there are good intentions and action. 

Now Jane is able to better manage her time.  She’s gained motivation, confidence and excitement for her workouts.  

Being a coach isn’t about berating clients into submission. Rather helping them move past small obstacles that hold them back.
