What is Strength? Are you strong? How do you know this to be true? After training a medley of clients, from athletes, bodybuilders, busy professionals to geriatric populations with unique needs – one variable remains true; strength.
In the fitness world, the word ‘strong’ brings to mind an image of Arnold in the gym with big muscles or some behemoth of a man lifting a lot of iron. Instead, think of strength as a relative term in relation to who you are and what you can lift or do. With different variables such as;
- Age
- Height
- Bodyweight
- Fat mass
- Muscle mass
- Ethnicity
- Predisposition health conditions
- Physiology
- Imbalances within the body
- And more.
So, What is Strength?
Strength is an insurance policy. What you build and put into it can pay off in reducing the risk of injury.
But building this portfolio can be challenging and not as simple as going to the gym, sitting on exercise equipment and reaping the rewards. If only we could be so lucky, as to say the same as playing the stock market.
In the article linked below, we start to understand testing for strength is a multi-angular approach.
A great paradox for the everyday lifter, weekend warrior and dad bod lifter, is to find and understand that strength comes in all different shapes and sizes. You can be overweight, strong but still at risk of injury Yet the same holds true for the lean muscular machine who appears to be the ideal Instagram model.
Assess, test, then reassess every few months. Keep your strength work evolving along with other functions of general physical performances, like cardiovascular. We will talk more about this in the coming months.
